- Are you feeling stuck in planning for college or a career?
- Do you feel uncertain about what you want or what you should do?
- Do you want to go to college?
- What should you choose as a major?
- Where should you go to school?
- What is the best path to the career that I want?
These decisions have consequences.
Choosing a path for your future is hard, even for people that know what they want to do. It is a cruel joke that people have to make huge decisions that will impact the rest of their lives at such a young age. Even the small choices that seem insignificant can change an outcome in your future. You need to determine what matters and what you need to do, and that’s exactly what our counselors do for people every day.
It is difficult to watch your son or daughter struggle with these decisions as parents. It is tempting to tell them what to do, but if you do, then they aren’t learning to take responsibility for themselves. It feels like you are wrong no matter what you do or don’t do. Our counselors can be the answer to that problem.
We help people map their futures.
It’s often helpful to talk to someone unbiased to help you see your path forward. Our counselors have been right where you are, both as students and parents. We know how to listen and help you determine what is truly important to you. Then, we get to work helping you learn to map out the best way forward to your “happily ever after.”

School & career indecision counseling helps students and young adults in Springfield who are feeling stuck choosing a college major, vocational path, or what to do after graduation. Counselors help clarify values, strengths, interests, and life goals; explore career and school options; overcome anxiety or lack of information; and make more confident decisions. The goal is to reduce confusion and set an actionable plan forward.
Anyone who feels uncertain about their future academic or career path is a good fit—high school students deciding on a major, college students unsure about career options, adults considering changing careers, or those who have been “undecided” for a long time with anxiety or stress about making the “right” choice.
Common factors include lack of clarity about personal interests or skills; external pressure (from family, peers, or cultural expectations); anxiety about making wrong choices; identity uncertainty; trait indecision (a pattern of struggling with decisions in many areas); and insufficient information about careers, majors, or job market trends.
Counselors may use interest and personality assessments, strengths & values inventories, exploration of possible careers and majors, informational interviews or job shadowing, anxiety and decision-making coaching, goal setting and planning, and sometimes parent/family involvement. They also help clients articulate what matters most to them, and break down big decisions into manageable steps.
The timeline varies depending on how long someone has been undecided, how many options they are considering, and how much prior exploration they’ve done. Some people feel more clarity after a few sessions (e.g. 3-6), especially once assessments and self-exploration are underway. Deeper identity issues or trait indecisiveness may require more time. Consistency in engaging with the process (homework, research, reflection) usually speeds results.
