How to Manage Stress in College

Being a college student is tough. You’re away from home for the first time, you’re juggling classes and extracurriculars, and you’re trying to figure out who you are and what you want to do with your life. It’s no wonder that so many college students struggle with stress. In fact, a recent study found that 74% of college students felt “very stressed” in the last twelve months.

If you’re struggling with stress, know that you’re not alone. And there are things you can do to manage your stress in a healthy way.

Talk to Someone Who Can Help

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by stress, it can be helpful to talk to someone who understands what you’re going through. Consider meeting with a counselor or therapist. They can help you develop healthy coping skills and work through any underlying issues that may be contributing to your stress.

Make Time for Yourself

It’s important to make time for yourself, even when you have a lot going on. This may look like taking a few minutes each day to journal or meditate, going for a walk outside, or spending time with friends and family members who make you feel good. Carving out time for activities that make you happy will help reduce your overall stress level.

Get organized

One of the main sources of stress for college students is feeling disorganized and behind on their work. If this sounds like you, there are some things you can do to get more organized and reduce your stress level. First, try creating a weekly schedule where you block out time for each of your classes, homework assignments, extracurricular activities, and relaxation/me-time. Having a set schedule will help you use your time more efficiently and prevent you from feeling like you’re constantly playing catch-up. Additionally, try using a planner or keeping a daily to-do list so that you always know what tasks need to be completed and when they’re due. Checking items off of your list as you complete them will help boost your sense of accomplishment and help reduce stress.
